The South of Scotland: Powering change from the heart of the UK
Energy Transition
Why the South of Scotland?
Sector Diversity
Supportive Ecosystem
Strategic Location
Unmatched Natural Resources & Development Ready Infrastructure
The South of Scotland is one of the UK’s most exciting frontiers for energy transition investment. With the highest solar irradiance in Scotland - on par with southern England - it’s perfectly positioned for large-scale solar projects. The Inner Solway Firth’s world-class tidal ranges of 7- 8 metres open the door to cutting-edge tidal energy innovation, while the region’s powerful agricultural base - home to over 25% of Scotland’s cattle and half its dairy - creates unrivalled potential for biogas, power, heat and renewable fertiliser.
Add to this major development-ready sites like Chapelcross (5.7 acres) and Cargenbridge (10 acres), and you have a rare combination of natural assets and shovel-ready opportunities that can power the future of renewable energy.
A Renewable Energy Powerhouse
Already weltering in green generation, the region delivers 16% of Scotland’s renewable electricity while consuming far less, marking it as a net exporter and a key node in the UK grid. The South generates over 4.8 TWh of renewable energy (as of 2020) - 3.6 times its local electricity consumption - making it a powerhouse of green energy and providing one of the most secure grids in Europe
In addition to this, the South of Scotland hosts nearly 10% of the UK’s onshore wind fleet, As of July 2022, some 28 further consented onshore wind farms were located in the region with a total of some 875MW of additional capacity yet to be constructed and some 140MW under construction. There were a further 1.6GW in planning and it is estimated that, in total, 2GW or more of onshore wind is likely to be constructed in the region by 2030.
Be Part of the UK’s First Net Zero Region
The South of Scotland is at the forefront of the UK’s journey to net zero, leading the charge to become the nation’s first fully net zero region. Backed by bold leadership, driven by ambitious communities, and supported by significant Scottish Government investment, this is a place where big ideas become real-world impact. From dramatic coastlines to expansive rural landscapes, the South of Scotland offers the space, talent, and resources to bring your next major project to life - and it’s ready for business.
As Scotland's designated Natural Capital Innovation Zone (NCIZ), the region is a living testbed for the future of net zero. Here, world-leading innovation meets the power of nature. Businesses can design, pilot, and scale breakthrough solutions that deliver both environmental and commercial returns, transforming our natural assets into a platform for global green growth.
Delivering a just transition to net zero is about more than outcomes - it’s about values. Success isn’t measured solely in carbon captured, but in the lasting benefits created for people and places. From new income streams for local communities to innovative business models shaping the net zero era, the South of Scotland is building a values-led economy designed to thrive. This approach is central to our mission: creating a fairer, stronger economy while becoming the UK’s first net zero region.
