building on success

The South of Scotland is home to world-class innovations and renowned as a thriving, entrepreneurial rural area. Known for its rich natural capital assets and a strong research base the region is the perfect place for businesses looking to implement technologies to meet healthcare challenges, whilst supporting innovative ways to develop and grow.

The region’s population and future trajectory make the push for solutions in the health innovation sector even more important. The pressures resulting from an ageing population, a rural location and relative population health are all important drivers that support growth.

our location

With an unrivalled geographic location, the South of Scotland is ideally situated to reach the North and the South and also has a number of seaports connecting Scotland with Ireland.

It is no surprise therefore that there are successful global businesses already established in the region including Kyowa Kirin, Covetrus and Du Pont Teijin Films. There are also many innovative companies such as Aqualution Solutions, Care Reality and Hilltop Leaf who have actively decided to locate in the South of Scotland. With the exciting opportunities that exist in the sector we know that global companies can successfully choose to locate themselves in the region, servicing beneficiaries on a domestic and global scale.

The success of the Health Innovation Sector in similar neighbouring areas, such as GlaxoSmithKline’s operations in Irvine and North Ayrshire, further demonstrate the opportunities that exist here in the South of Scotland.

As well as targeted support from SOSE, the region benefits from larger, strategic initiatives to support economic growth. The Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal is set to further develop the region, with significant investment planned. The Deal will see local government, the third sector, higher and further education work together to support business, innovation and skills to enable sustainable economic growth in the South of Scotland.

SKILLED LABOUR, ALREADY IN THE REGION

The South of Scotland offers excellent educational institutes. The region’s academic institutions are already teaching curricula designed to give tomorrow’s talent the skills they need to excel and deliver in the economy of the future. Several top Scottish Universities and Colleges have a presence in the region including Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), Borders College, Dumfries and Galloway College, Edinburgh Napier University Mountain Biking Innovation Centre, University of Glasgow, Heriot-Watt University, The Open University and the University of the West of Scotland.

We can also introduce you to institutions such as the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland (NMIS) and the Medicines Manufacturing Innovation Centre, a group of industry-led manufacturing research and development facilities with a network of partners across Scotland that have been brought together to boost the manufacturing community.

A WORTHY INVESTMENT FOR BOTH YOUR YOU AND YOUR EMPLOYEES

The COVID-19 pandemic placed a greater emphasis on health and the importance of this in the context of the economy and natural environment.

A place where wellbeing is valued and the quality of life is enviable, the region is rich in resources that are key to a healthy work-life balance, which many employees are now prioritising. Where better to establish your business than somewhere that your staff can be encouraged to lead healthy lives.

As with the healthcare industry in general, Health Innovation continues to look at more holistic health and wellbeing that is personalised to each individual. It therefore makes sense to be based in a region that is renowned for its food and drink production and with a long heritage in agriculture, fishing and farming. Now the region has become even more enterprising, combining technological innovation with social and cultural innovation. With a growing focus on agricultural technology, South of Scotland is well placed to help you develop and test out your services, products and platforms in the Health Innovation space.
